Samo, Moraiya (In Gujarati)

This dish is called સામો or મોરિયો in gujarati. It is also called as वरी चे तांदूळ in Marathi. I searched the English name of this dish and it is called as "Jungle Rice". I dont know if it is right or wrong but that is what I got it.

Anyways, as it is known, it is a dish which is eaten during fast. Also it is SOO YUMMY that even when there is no fast, we prepare this recipe.

So here are the ingredients:

Samo Rice (You will get it in any Grocery Store)          1 tea cup
Buttermilk                                                                   1 and half tea cup
Water                                                                          1 and half tea cup
Green Chillies                                                              2-3
Ginger                                                                         1 small piece
Jeera (Cumin Seeds)                                                   1 tea spoon
Ghee                                                                          1 and half tea spoon
Salt                                                                             To taste
Coriander Leaves                                                        To garnish
Haldi Powder (Turmeric)*                                           For Color
Potato (Optional)                                                        1 small

Steps:
  • Soak Samo rice in water for 10-15 minutes
  • Cut potato in small pieces
  • Heat ghee in a pan. Add cumin seeds. Wait till they splutter.
  • Add potato (if using) at this stage. Add little water and salt and cover the lid for 5 mins till potato becomes soft. Then add samo rice and follow further steps
  • If not using potato, add soaked samo rice. Add water and buttermilk in same quantity as mentioned above.
  • Add Salt and cover the lid. After 5-8 mins, the samo rice will soak the water and buttermilk. Add ginger and chilli paste. The paste should be freshly grounded
  • Add haldi powder. Keep mixing for 5 more mins. Now take it in a bowl and garnish with coriander leaves. Eat with buttermilk, it will taste awesome. Serve hot.

* Some people do not use haldi powder during Fasting, so you can avoid that.

  2. Samo seeds or Mario seeds popularly known as Bhagar in India are seeds of a grass Echinochloa Colonum .
It grows amongst the rice paddy as it requires damp and moisture laden soil.
In Rajasthan in India the seeds are used as rice, hence its common name in English is jungle rice (wild rice).
The wild rice is prepared in different styles across various states of India. It forms a heavy and a filling meal and used generally by Hindus on fast days.
